Music is one of the most appealing genres of art in the world. However, it is important to note that there is more in music than what most entertained people see. The underlying argument is that music is closely related to the parent culture of the people surveyed and therefore, different cultures have different music. The difference can be in relation to numerous aspects, which include instruments, types of dance, and the occasions to which music is played.
Irish music originated from the island of Ireland. The main genres identifiable with Irish music are rock, pop, and soul music. There is no instrument specifically used for Irish music, but the most popular instrument is the flute. Traditionally an instrument called a fiddle was used accompanied by some uilleann pipes.
Irish music is applicable on different occasions, but the most popular is soul music, commonly used in times of lamentation due to its smooth flow. In the recent past, different dances have evolved with Irish music, but the most common is the jig dance. Other dances include the polka and the reels dance, popular with rock and pop genres respectively (Carson, 79).
West African music originates from a vast land, including part of the Sahara and extending to the Atlantic Ocean. The main genres in West Africa music include Rhumba, blues, and Jazz. Notably, West African music largely borrows from Western culture, especially in the blues genre. Unlike Irish music, the drum is the main instrument used in West Africa, accompanied by other stringed instruments, especially the guitar. West African music is applicable on different occasions, like traditional ceremonies, but it is mostly usedon entertainment occasions. However, no specific dance is identifiable with West African music. The rhythm defines the dance even though in some occasions the jig dance is applicable (Nketia, 124)
In conclusion, there is a substantial difference between Irish music and West African music in relation to the different genres, musical instruments, and the different types of dances as well as the occasions applicable. However, it is worth noting that both have evolved from their traditional cultures, despite the great Western influence.
